Private telecom operators have opposed the latest spam control rules issued by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). In a statement issued today (17 February), telecom companies have expressed concern over a significant increase in punishment for non-complexes. SP Kochhar, Director General of Cellular Operators Association of India, said that COAI is disappointed to see that TRAI amendment has been issued without solving all issues to strengthen the consumer protection against unwanted Commercial Communication (UCC).

Penalty is imposed for not accepting new rules

Telecom operators now face financial penalty to fail to follow the new rules, especially for incorrect reporting of spam communication. COAI also said that there has been a flood of spam due to no regulation for OTT communication services. The COAI also argued about this and said that telecom operators have taken enough steps to stop unwanted calls and messages.

The COAI said that it is also worrying that the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has greatly increased the fine on telecom service providers.
