AI: Google’s leading scientist Jeff Dean believes that Artificial Intelligence (AI) can reach the level within the next one year where he started working like a junior software engineer. In the AI ASCENT event of Sequoia Capital, Dean said that AI’s capabilities are increasing rapidly, especially in works like coding. At a time when jobs in the tech industry are already low and competition for freshers is hard, this development of AI can be challenging for initial level engineers.

Dean’s remarks have come at a time when generative AI tools like Chatgpt, Github Copilot and Google’s Gemini have become very common among developers. These tools not only make representative coding tasks easier, but also give real-time suggestions and can prepare the entire code blocks. However, Dean also said that writing code is just a part, because the work of junior engineers is much wider than this.

These people will get a competition

He said in a conversation with Business Insider, “A virtual engineer should not only get to write code in IDE, but also to understand testing, performance debugging and other technical problems.” When asked how AI would learn these comprehensive engineering skills, Dean gave an example of human learning process. He said that as a new engineer reads the documentation, learns tools and gains experience from seniors, AI can also improve itself by using in virtual environment, learning from documents and experiences.

Dean believes that in the coming time, AI can enhance himself to such an extent through reading documents and virtual experiments that he starts thinking and working like a junior engineer. He said, “I think virtual engineer can prove to be good in reading the documentation and using in the virtual environment. This method will continuously improve them.”

Although Dean did not make it clear how far AI will finally go, but he definitely said that this change will have a big impact. “I don’t know how far it will take us, but it is so certain that this change will be very important.”
