What is normal internet?

Normal Internet mainly includes DSL, cable, fiber optic and mobile data. It usually provides connection through underground cables or towers. Fiber broadband nowadays can provide speeds ranging from 100 Mbps to 1 Gbps. Latency is low in normal internet which is good for gaming and video calls. The connection in cable and fiber remains stable most of the time and is less affected by rain or weather. Normal Internet is most used in cities and towns and is suitable for home and office connections.

What is satellite internet?

Through satellite internet, data reaches your device directly via satellite, without the need for terrestrial cables. It is useful in areas where cable or fiber cannot reach. In recent times, companies like Starlink and OneWeb provide speeds ranging from 50 Mbps to 250 Mbps. Latency in satellite internet is higher than normal internet because data has to be sent to the satellite and back. Connection may be affected by weather such as heavy rain or storm. Satellite internet is a good option to provide internet in rural or remote areas but it can be a bit expensive and slower in latency compared to normal internet in cities.

Who is faster?

In terms of speed, normal internet (fibre) is faster and more reliable than satellite internet. Fiber has low latency and is a better choice for video calls, online gaming and high-resolution streaming. Satellite internet is beneficial when you do not have the option of normal broadband. Although the speed of satellite internet has improved after the advent of new technology, the effect of latency and weather still remains a challenge.
